Built my Online Bookshelf Surrounded by Physical Books

February 4, 2012

Several times over the past couple of years, i decided to migrate … well, more like copy … my physical books to the digital realm while sitting in the library. That is to say, i haven’t purchased or found a free way to have digital copies of the books—only a catalogue. Man, i should’ve just said that from jump. Anyway…I like instant access to knowledge, to lists—which is probably why i love the Interwebs so… Read more of: Built my Online Bookshelf Surrounded by Physical Books

stream of consciousness #0013: all i do

February 3, 2012

For years my tears carried screams muffled by showered water, “I am not my father. I am not him.” I hated my given for years, not changing till i met poetry, spoken words from a friend familiar. Even still, i refuse to use my sur; i see little equity in it, this name more reminder of ancestral tarnish and pain, fatherly shadows, nothing to build upon. I’ve embraced a duality of innumerable voices bouncing around:… Read more of: stream of consciousness #0013: all i do

treating every encounter as if memoir material

January 28, 2012

After a recent introduction to a new clique (or maybe just a roughshod gathering of friends and friends of friends), i had a feeling, a slight tugging, that this was part of something bigger, that this Brooklyn night will end up years later across ruled parchment. Possibly the names will be changed, or, remaining intact, will only exist in a systrophic litany without fat, no delicacies for the reader to nosh upon, compelled to research… Read more of: treating every encounter as if memoir material

Personal Book Embargo

December 22, 2011

I have to do this. It’s a necessary evil, a vital push towards chopping down this never-ending tree that sprouts books as fruit. I need to do this. Mantra! Lol. For 2012, i’ve decided to place an embargo on my book purchasing—with two caveats: one, i have six get out of jail free cards, which allow me to purchase only six books throughout the year, mandatory school books excluded; and two, receiving a book as… Read more of: Personal Book Embargo

writers, photographers look: 25 short stories project

January 23, 2011

I’m a big fan of @Kickstarter! They have kick ass projects. I love books. I’m a writer. An emerging one at that. Combine those ingredients, and you’ll understand why i fell in love with Avery Anthology’s 25 Short Stories Project and pledged to fund. I’ve embedded the project’s video below, but in case you’re on a Flash-less phone and can’t view it, here’s the skinny: For the past four years, Avery has scoured America in search… Read more of: writers, photographers look: 25 short stories project

day 001 – importance of digital books, of all books

January 11, 2011

This is the genesis of the My Life in 365 Days project. I wanted to start yesterday with a photo i snapped of some geese, but they didn’t strike me with inspiration, and after speaking to my father, i agreed the once-in-our-lifetime date of 01.11.11 was too good to pass up. I love numbers, and although i’m not heavily into numerology, studying or believing it wholeheartedly, i do have a passive interest in numerical significance… Read more of: day 001 – importance of digital books, of all books

the Oxford English Dictionary is dead—long live the Oxford English Dictionary

December 31, 2010

I love words. Without shuddering from the dreaded “labeling,” i am a logo- and bibliophile. So when i heard the news, as reported by the NY Times and the Huffington Post, that there would be an imminent dem…transitioning of the Oxford English Dictionary from print and online versions to only the latter, i was immediately disheartened and worried. I should rewind first. Earlier this year, i came across the leather-bound version of the 20-volume set of… Read more of: the Oxford English Dictionary is dead—long live the Oxford English Dictionary
